That is the future of work.”

Note : The “global will, a great job AND a great life” DEMANDS BOTH/AND Leadership skills.

7 Must-Do’s to
Level Up Your
Leadership

Pamela Stambaugh

As a Leader, do you WANT to
Give what is NEEDED?

BOTH/AND Leadership means holding the tension of seemingly opposites.

An example of Both/And (Paradox)  is “Tough Love”

When you embrace what is NEEDED from you, you can move toward results-oriented actions with more ease.

“Both/And Leadership” is also called
“Paradoxical Leadership”.

What is a “Both/And” Leader?

The difference between average and outstanding firms is an ‘AND Mentality’. We must find and create tensions – force people into different space for thinking

“This is not just a performance issue but a survival issue, because managing paradox helps foster creativity and high performance.

Paul Polman is an example of a socially responsible AND business results responsible leader.

7 Dimensions of Team PowerTM

Leveling Up your Leadership is NOT a SKILLS issue.

ORIENTATION and  CONTEXT are important to BEING a Leader.  This is BEING, not DOING work.

What I will Cover:

1.What Stops Productivity = QUANTITY of work that gets done?

2.What Stops Performance = QUALITY of the work?

3.What Stops Profitability = Return on EFFORT?

4.The 7 Must-Do’s to Level Up Your Leadership woven into the above

What Stops Productivity?

AKA “Quiet Quitting”

1.Lack of purpose? PERSPECTIVE

2.Lack of clarity? PERSPECTIVE

3.Lack of TRUST?

4. Unresolved conflict? TRUST

5.Not feeling heard? TRANSPARENCY

6. Other dissatisfiers?

Lack of Trust Stops Productivity

When someone gives their all, they are ENGAGED. The natural byproduct is amazing results.

Trust is the baseline dimension of team power.

Hint : To be trusted, be consistently trustworthy!

Poor Perspective stops Productivity

MANY classic sayings are associated with your perspective.

“As you believe, so can you achieve.”

“If you think you can, or you think you can’t, either way, you’re right.”

How you hold your view of the future is the future you are living into.

Productivity increases with Transparency

To achieve true business success requires being transparent. When you are transparent, you are more trustworthy, more powerful.

Words like this will be spoken about you: honorable, respectable, without reproach.

Hint: Being trustworthy and transparent are transformational leadership traits.

One arena where leaders are failing is in response to Remote Workers

Employees

Report they are productive at work

Leaders

Say they have full confidence their team is productive

Leaders:  It is up to You to End Productivity Paranoia

What Stops Performance?  Remote Work Concern #2

of employees say they need a better reason to go into the office than just company expectations.

Leaders:  Embrace the fact that people come in for each other

What Stops Performance? Remote Work Concern #3

of employees say they’d stay at their company longer if they could benefit more from learning and development support.

If People Can’t Learn, They’ll Leave
Many workers feel that they need to leave a company to develop their skills.

= TURN-OVER!

Leaders:  Re-recruit your Employees

Key Findings of Remote Work Concerns

Key Findings

The three pivots leaders need to make:

End productivity paranoia

Embrace the fact that people come in for each other

Re-recruit your employees

How to Deal with Performance

Assess your People to Determine UP, or OUT while taking into consideration that employees need new reasons to stay with you.

“The manager is the lever to the new global will:
a great job
AND a great life.”

The “global will, a great job AND a great life” DEMANDS BOTH/AND Leadership skills.

I will offer you a Team Alignment/Performance Grid + Team Coaching Tool before we end.

Performance is Best when Collaborative

No one individual can make a mark on the world without others. To grow is to team up.

The gift of the collaborative also contains a challenge that a leader must negotiate!

As noted, your team isn’t always in the same room when meeting, creating unique challenges when encouraging and requiring collaboration.

Accountability is Needed to Improve Performance

BEING accountable means seeking and bringing clarity continually to do the right things, right.

  • Bringing focus.
  • Communicating clearly.
  • Flexible when required.

As noted, your team isn’t always in the same room when meeting, with unique needs requiring unique conversations for holding team members accountable.

What Stops Profitability, i.e.  Return on Effort?

Either/Or choices are needed for choosing shoes, where to go for dinner, hopefully who you marry.

Either/Or is not so helpful as an approach to many of your strategic business decisions, or developing your team for productivity, performance, and producing intended results.

(…or raising children, where holding the Both/And tension of tough love is needed).

Being Results Oriented supports Profitability

Orientation needs to be facing forward, focused on your desired result.  It’s how you develop the mental and emotional muscles to tackle even more impactful goals.

The bigger the goal, the greater the reward when achieved!

Innovation supports Profitability

Innovation involves change, some change just happens. The pandemic dramatically demonstrated that. Necessity was the mother of many inventions!

Many people are disturbed by the pace of change, so bring your team along with compassion and clarity.

Authentic leaders stay open and positive, supporting beneficial innovation.

7 Must-Do’s are ALL Paradoxical Leadership Driven (Both/And Leadership)

Productivity = QUANTITY of work that gets done.

Level Up your  1. Perspective, 2. Trust, 3. Transparency

Performance = QUALITY of the work that gets done.

Level Up your 4. Collaboration, 5. Accountability

Profitability = Return on EFFORT.

Level Up your 6. Innovation, 7. Results Orientation

Consider the 7 “Must Do’s” as Rungs of the Ladder to Success

Blind Spots that Hinder your Success are Revealed in 12 Leadership Paradoxes

1. Perspective (2 Paradoxes)

2. Trust (1 Paradox)

3. Transparency (2 Paradoxes)

4. Collaboration (1 Paradox)

5. Accountability (2 Paradoxes)

6. Innovation (2 Paradoxes)

7. Results Orientation (2 Paradoxes)

Paradoxical Leadership means holding the tension of 2 seemingly opposite traits.

When Leading, What do you Want?

Leading for Team Collaboration; What do you want?

  • Loyalty while at the same time not hiding from differences.
  • Inclusive
  • Avoiding interpersonal conflicts that abort the well-being of the team
  • Avoiding the lizard brain reactions and self-interest
  • Communicating everything in the team setting without withholding

Definitions of the 2 Traits that Comprise this Leadership Paradox:

Authoritative (the dynamic, or action trait):  The desire for decision making authority and the willingness to accept decision-making responsibility.

Collaborative (the support, or gentle trait):  The tendency to collaborate with others when making decisions.

Both/And with Tension” is the Paradox Balanced Versatility

which is the bright green square = optimal; green acceptable, etc.

Handout Question #2:  Do you have room for improvement?

Testimonial of recent recipient of this gift

Being on the receiving end of that [assessment] and the enlightening walkthrough was such a gift.

I am creating a new reality for myself as I lean into my vulnerability and tenderness as a cornerstone of my power. And even though nothing we uncovered yesterday ended up as a surprise to me, it was still incredibly challenging to sit bare before someone with mathematical proof of my weaknesses areas for growth.

Wrestling through all of my feelings this morning reminded me that I am choosing to persist and that I am in fact tenacious when it comes to my healing and the perpetual act of becoming.

I am incredibly humbled, tender, and grateful. Thank you, Pamela.
